Hope this e-mail/letter finds you well

Hello everyone,
I know this has been a standard opening for a long time now. But I was just wondering, why is it "well" and not "good."
"Well" as an adverb would be describing the act of finding and not the recipient. So it would be more like saying "I hope this e-mail/letter will be successful in finding you" and not "I hope you're fine." Or am I missing something here?
Thank you so much in advance.

Well can be an adjective with a meaning similar to healthy.

It's less hackneyed and more direct to say simply I hope you are well.
