Hope for the best(chess)

Hi.
May I rephrase
"...,Black must advance his b7-pawn and hope for the best."
as
"...,Black must advance his b7-pawn and be hopeful."?

Would you please give other rephrasings?

Thanks in advance!

Your rephrasing is not precise enough. "...,Black must advance his b7-**** and hope for a favourable outcome."

I thought hopeful means hoping for a favorable outcome

"Be hopeful" just sounds wrong. Sorry. The meaning is perfect, but it just sounds wrong. It lacks the tiny ironic twist, for one thing.

hope for the best
keep his fingers crossed
pray that everything turns out all right
rub his rabbit's foot
trust to luck

Do you play chess? To hope for the best when you push a **** is like saying "Here, kitty, kitty" to a hungry tiger.

Nobody says, "Be hopeful." You might find that embroidered on a kitchen towel or something, but it would ring archaic, and nobody would say that, normally. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because we "have hope", not "be hopeful". I think we normally are "hopeful of" something, too. "Hope for the best" is a well-worn formula,

Thou meanth 'hope for the best' equals 'have hope'?

Means be full of hope?
