What is the difference between honor and respect?

Both can be used as a verb to mean to hold in high esteem, so, in that context, there isn't much if any difference.

Respect can also mean to avoid interfering with, such as, "I respect your privacy and won't ask any more questions." "Or, I respect your right to have that opinion."

One wouldn't use honor in that context.

But, one could say either, "I respect your service to our country." or, "I honor your service to our country."

Honour is a higher degree of respect. As quoted from the dictionary, "honour" means "to show great respect for someone or something" and the keyword here is the word GREAT. The word great shows that as compared to the word "respect", "honour" is something more than just "respect". "Honour" carries a partial meaning of proud and honesty,depending on the context it is used in.

In a sentence, "It would be my honour to meet the President of the country." The President being in a more respectable authority is worth more respect due to the things he does.

"We must respect the speaker." This is a example of a use of the word respect. Because the things a speaker does and the things that a President does are on different levels. Since the President is the one who does more important things, therefore the word "honour" is used.(To show how good he is in managing the country.)

Another comparison, "honour" is usually used in a more formal way. An example,"It would be my honour to meet the President of the country." and in this case respect is not used.

However so, the context of how the word is used must not be neglected. The degree of respect,as mentioned before, is particularly important as the word brings out how much you want to express. If you are confused with previous parts, just focus on this part at the bottom.

"Honour" is a stronger word than "respect". It is like wordplay on the degree of expressiveness. Another parallel example would be "serious" and "disastrous". "disastrous" is a stronger word than "serious".Example such as "His action of stealing a pack of sweets will bring about serious consequences.". "Serious" is used as the word "disastrous" is used when the author feels that this event have a magnitude equivalent or similar of that to a disaster. In other words, "disastrous" is more serious than just "serious".

In an essay writing, degree of expressiveness is extremely important as it may alter the author original intention on how the plot should go. In a comprehension passage, we must figure out using the same theory how must the author wants to emphasise on. In general, the words "honour" and "respect" are different in terms of the degree of expressiveness.

Are you asking if excess and access mean the same thing? If so, the answer is no.

Excess means a supply or amount of something beyond what is needed, e.g., "We had an excess of the size XX t-shirts and not enough of the mediums."

Access means to gain use of or admittance to, e.g., "We need to access those files to determine what the data shows."

As far as the discussion of honor and respect, in some cases, honor is used to mean great respect, and in others it is used (as a verb) in virtually the same way as respect.

e.g., "I honor your decision to take that course of action." That means virtually the same thing as, "I respect your decision to take that course of action."

I think the difference described in the above discussion may relate more to honor as used with individuals or groups of people, as in the example of the president of the U.S., as opposed to its use with ideas or actions. But, even then, there can be a nuanced difference in the bredth of the admiration conveyed. His points were very good ones.

"Excess" refers to more than enough. (In general) While "access" refers to the method or possibility of getting near to a place or person, or the right to use or look at something. When comparing the difference between words we must take note of its meaning, degree of expressiveness and also the context on how it is being used.

If 2 words have similar meanings then we check their degree of expressiveness like what I mentioned earlier in the previous post. But somewords are very special like "excess" and "access". The spelling of the words are close, but we must not be confused. The meaning of the words as mentioned in the post by sam1947 are correct. Therefore, understanding the differences of the words is easy.

Honor shows the value and worth placed upon a person such as parents , simply because they gave you life. It is an internal feeling of thankfulness for all their sacrifices made.

Respect on the other hand, is about showing outwardly, how one feels about others. When one respects, one wants to obey the rules of society , have good manners and be a responsible family member and citizen.

When honor and respect are joined together, then the unity of love and commitment to each other grows. With both strengths in each other is encouraged and admired, while weaknesses are not mocked or put-down. Instead people encourage and help the other gain strength in that weak area.

with out honor. Not the other way around.
This is becomes challenging depending on the culture and your believes.

In some cultures ( USA, Netherland) a pimp or , can be respect with out horror.

But in some other cultures
there is no honor nor respect
for a PIMP
