Honing comma skills!

Hi there!

I'm helping a friend with a project and while going through his paper, noticed a line that made me scratch my head. It goes pretty much like this:

John copied the sentence on his notebook and, staring intently at it, started pondering how to translate it.

What made me wonder was the usage of commas in the sentence. Is it correct? My spider-sense wants me to add a comma before "and" too, but maybe I'm wrong? I could be wrong!

I think I'll never be able to sleep until I know! Any of you willing to step up to the plate and help me out? It'd be much appreciated!
