Hone

Hi,

Is ‘hone one’s skills’ a common expression?

“I really wanted to try out for a football team so I spent the whole summer honing my skills.”

Thank you.

In the US, "honing my skills" would not be used in the context of (American style) football. You'd hear instead:

I really wanted to try out for the (American style) football team (at my school) so I spent the whole summer (weight) lifting and practicing.
