Hometown and native place

I would use both of them interchangeably, but I wonder what differences between them are.

So I conclude I should use "hometown" as far as possible to sound natural. But I wonder if hometown could be used to represent both a country and as well as local regions.

I mean can I say,
If I went for a trip inside our border from one region to other region, can I still use "hometown or native place" to the people over there in the other region. Say, "My hometown/na

Okay, again, "native place" is a decidedly non-native thing to say where I live. I would NEVER say this.

It refers to the town, not the state or the region or the country.

I grew up in X.
