Homestead estate

What exactly does homestead estate mean?
I have referred to the dictionary and yet I have not found anything useful-
Does this only refer to the farming lands one has? or could it be a general term for all real estate that only involve "lands"?

In Texas, we have a "homestead" exemption for taxes. The homestead is your primary personal residence and its land. The "Homestead Act" in American history (1862) gave settlers a parcel of wilderness land (unoccupied land in the west) if they would use it as a farm.
