Homes

I often hear something like "What's up, homes," and I understand it as a slangy term for a friend, or someone in your neighborhood.

Curious ...

1) Is it only used as a vocative case?
2) Is 'homes' used for both singular and plural nouns?

Thanks,
Hiro
