Home and House

I think home is the one where people live and house is the one where people dont live. Am I correct?

Top answer

No-- how could a house be somewhere people don't live, Madhivanan? The 'house' is the building and the 'home' is the family center or psychological place of refuge. In practice, however, 'home' is often used in the same objective physical sense as 'house'.

Hi, nona incognito here.

Of course, not all homes are houses. Someone might live in a flat, bungalow, apartment, studio, boat, caravan, mobile home etc etc, and that would be their home.

Home does also have the psychological meaning as mentioned byMr. M. We talk of 'making a house a home' by adding the personal touches and creating a warm welcoming atmosphere.

Hello all

In addition to what MisterM and undercover Nona have said, not all houses are homes.

A house can also be:

1. The name of a building ('English Forums House, Main St, Webworld');
2. A commercial operation, e.g. a banking house;
3. A building for a special purpose, in combinations (boat-house, out-house);
4. A dynasty (The House of Atreus);

House of Commons

A full house (in cards)

Home: Massachusetts (whew! hard state to spell!) is home to many Ivy League schools.

And I have to sing this little tune:
Oh give me a home (not a house)
where the buffalo roam
where the deer and the antelope play . . .

I hope my terrible singing hasn't scared anyone off.

A home is actually a house, but a house isn't actually a home.

Totally agree: 'The home is where the heart lies'.

I wouldn't agree, Floral - houses are usually homes; and homes aren't always houses!
