Holds back//stops time

Conservation-restoration is an art that holds back time. Without the skillful and dedicated work of the conservators to cross the span of time, we wouldn't be able to appreciate so many wonderful works of art.

Hi,

Is it right to inerpret the bolds in the above as "stops time" and "bride the time differences between that of works of art and that of modern viewers?" Thanks in advance.

Without the skillful and dedicated work of the conservators to cross the span of time , This is not a clear menaing to me, but I suppose it is the same general idea as the previous expression.
