"Holding up"

Hi there!

In the sentence "holding up the barricade(s)".....would "holding up" mean..."maintaining in place"?

"Forever and ever holding up the barricades"

That didn't help much. I would expect 'holding the barricades' (no 'up') but I suppose that the meaning is 'successfully defending the barricades'.
