Holding back dinner

Hi

A woman went to the rectory to talk to the priest. Because she felt ill she laid on the sofa and fell asleep. When it was twilight she woke up. The priest showed up and said:

I’ve been holding back dinner, hoping that you would dine with me. It

would give us an opportunity to have a little talk – if you

feel up to it, of course.

Do you think the dinner was ready but he didn't eat it. Or he told someone to prepare it later?

  • Depending on how elaborate the meal is to be, it may be prepared in stages.
  • If he's just planning to open a can of soup, it's probably yet unopened.
