hold the secret for

Some frogs naturally freeze solid in winter, then thaw and hop away in the spring ... Scientists believe these frogs hold the secret for safer organ transplants.

Does "hold" mean "have" and "own?"
Second, could I say "hold the secret of" instead? Thanks.

Yes (but 'contain' would be better-- frogs are not very bright) and yes (but 'for' is better, since transplants will involve more than frog metabolism alone.)

Thanks, Mister Micawber.

The latter part of your reply is over my head; could you spare me a few simple words again? Thank you in advance.

The study of frog metabolism is not the only research which will help learn about transplants.
