Hold on to/onto.....

Hi,

I believe if I were writing 'hold on to' that would be correct.

I assume if I wrote something such as 'I clutched on to the handrail' that would be correct as 'clutched' has effectively replaced 'held/hold'.

Just seeking reassurance.

Thanks for the advise. However, if you had to chooshow oils it be 'on to'?

Apologies, doing this on my phone and it didn't work out too well.

The exact sentence I'm working with is 'i clutched defensively on to the door handle'.

I assume 'on to' is correct, as if I were to hold on to something.

Once again, I would avoid clutched on to, but held on to would be fine.
I clutched the door handle defensively, or I held on to the door handle defensively.
