Hold it together

Hi teacher,

He had to choke back tears during a speech,... and he barely held it together.

1. What does "it" here?

2. Is it ok to say "hold himself together", but there's also "pull yourself together", a difference?

Thanks

This one sometimes sarcastically means "his sanity."

Best regards, - A.

Hi Avangi,

2. If for compsoure, does "she held herself well in the meeting" make sense?

Thanks

1. I don't think a native speaker would take it that way.

Usually, what holds a speech together is its structure.

Of course you can think of "the speech" as the act of delivering an address, as well as the text, or message of the address.
