Hold it to your side

Hi,

Can you tell me what the phrase in boldface mean? Does it mean the person holds it to his chest?

Hold it to your side, and it becomes a book again,” Sir Preparation instructed, “and then you can stow it within your doublet.”

Thank you.

There isn't enough context to tell exactly what it means, but it is not the chest. You can let your arm drop to your side. I see him holding the book the way you do when you have to carry several books, sort of crooked in one arm.
