Hold his glare

Jack turns, goes back to Simon and glares furiously at him. Simon tries to hold his glare but can't and looks down, obviously intimidated.

1) Is this OK?

2) Is it clear enough that Simon attempts to hold Jack's glare?

3) If no, could I use "withstand" instead of "hold"?
