Hi, English Gurus!

"Laura stood up and held to one of the wagon bows"

In that sentence, what is the difference between "held" and "held to"?

My non-native speaker-ish sense is that, "held" means just held the wagon bows, but "held to" means held the wagon bows only to keep physica balance.

Guide me, my gurus!
