0Many years ago I learned "is hoist by his own petard" from 01i00Perry Mason.02i00 I recently thought I should know why it's not "is hoisted," and undertook a search. I finally ran out of patience. My American Heritage simply says, "transitive verb, hoisted, hoisting, hoists. etc." Everybody quotes the quote, but nobody talks about the past participle. (MW doesn't give participles.) Can someone please help?02br 02br 00Many thanks, - A.0-

0Hi,02br 02br 00The original phrase was written by a well-known author a long, long time ago, when ideas about grammar were different.05002br 02br 00Best wishes, Clive010id1
0Thanks, Clive. I only know one well-known author who's audacious enough to remain unnamed: 01i00when in 01font00eternal lines02font00 to time thou grow'st - - - - and 01font00this02font00 gives life to thee.02i02br 02br 00I read a dozen references and it fell to you
