HITTING THE BEAT, GETTING TO THE MUSIC and GETTING UP ON THE ONE

Hi friends,
someone could explain to me these expressions here:

'Like Prince says when he's talking about "hitting the beat" and "getting to the music and the rhythm", I'm going to keep "getting up on the one", brother, I'm just going to try to keep my music getting up on the one, getting up on the one every day I play.'
Thanks in advance, Jo.

These seem to be very specific to the world of a certain kind of music. I'm almost certain that "getting up on the one" means "strongly emphasizing the first beat of each measure". ONE two three four ONE two three four.

  • I'm fairly certain that "hitting the beat" means almost the same thing.
  • I don't know what "getting to the music" means, but it's probably something similar to the others.
