Hitherto?

Hi! everyone.Could you guide me,how to use "hitherto"?
I tried to make a sentence and i:e Until the two countries do not discuss this issue peacefully, hitherto they won't get any good result except war.
I will be very grateful,if you tell me the correct use of it.

I use it as an adverb to mean "prior to the present time," or prior to some time or event which is referenced. I had hitherto never seen a display of aurora borealis. But on some specified occasion, I did see such a display.
