Hitched a ride on a pencil point

And of course he has seen his name (Donald Zinkoff) from time to time. But he has never traced it on see-through paper. He has never tried to copy it, has never hitched a ride on a pencil point, feeling the shape and movement of his name's letters.

Hi,

Does the bolded part in the above sound familiar to you? Does it mean "has never held a pencil?" Thanks.

No, it is odd. I presume it means that he has never written his name.

so do you mean that he was just copying it down instead of writing it for himself. Was he simply just copying down what was under his paper?
