Hit the floor running?

To quote psychologist and philosopher William James:"It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult taks which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome." I couldn't agree more. I hit the floor running - and smiling.

Could you tell me what does the last sentence mean? In particular, what does it mean by hit the floor running? Thanks a lot.

It seems quite obvious to me: he hits the floor running (= begins at maximum speed or effort) at the'beginning of a difficult task'.
