Hit the bottom

Hi

What does hit the bottom mean in this text?

'These people are worth helping! They are down and out, but they are not the dregs of society. They've just hit the bottom that's all."

Of course I guessed it means a person who has reached the end of misery. But I couldn't bring any synonym for it.

Hello, Not to reach the end of misery, but those that have reached the lowest point in life, when life can't seemingly get worse. A more typical expression is to reach rock bottom. And hopefully, with some help, things will be uphill, in other words Get Better.
