Hit-and-miss / Hit-or-miss

Most of the physical dictionaries I've consulted list those two expressions as synonyms and the definition given refers to something done without organization or planning.

I've aways thought that they were two different terms; hit-and-miss meaning that something is inconsistent, sometimes successful and sometimes not; whereas hit-or-miss that something has not been thought out, planned.

What's the real deal then?

Hi, I don't entirely disagree with you, but most native speakers would, I think, see them as the same. The context would usually help clarify the meaning.. My dictionary says that they are synonyms, meaning aimed or done carelessly, at random, or haphazardly.
