Then don't go back too far. I imagine that Shakespearian English would daunt most of us.

Yeah at least some of what Shakespeare wrote would make sense, but is there a period (when) when the English spoken was totally different from today? I mean like you wont even know that the person is speaking English

You probably wouldn't recognize Chaucer's English, and King Alfred would sound like a German, I think.
