Historical Present

Please give me an example of the historical present speech form.

"I'm walking home the other day, and all of a sudden this guy comes up to me and says..." - Would this be historical present?

Also do you the experts think it's okay to shift forms or should stay in the form used from the get go?

Top answer

Yes, that is called 'narrative/historical/dramatic present'. Within the overall structure, forms can occasionally shift, but it is generally not a good idea.
