everybody tries to do his/her job perfectly

or

everybody tries to do their job perfectly

which one is correct or can they be used both? if it's so why?

For informal writing-- and of course in conversation, I would use their . For careful writing, I would use his or her , but if it recurs, I would recast to avoid the awkwardness: All of the staff try to do their jobs perfectly .
