His Vs Their

Is it wrong to use "his" (instead of "their") in the following sentence?

1. I am grateful to everyone for his help all these years.

Am I being hyper-correct in the following?

2. I am grateful to everyone, especially to the teachers, for his help all these years.

(By the bye, is the second "to" after "especially" necessary?)
