Hi. Which is correct? Also would you consider the underlined part in sentence 2 an absolute phrase or clause? Thank you for your help in advance.

How about these? Which is correct?

1. His being in the team has been a major factor in their winning the championship.
2. Him being in the team has been a major factor in them winning the championship.
