Vocabulary

"his" instead of "my"

Why he used "his" instead of "my"? I think it is because more formal, but could you please explain how should I use same structure and where?
"I received my Ph.D. from the College of Information Science and Technology, Drexel University, 2005, and his M.S.degree from the School of Information and Library Sciences at Indiana University in 1996. "
