Grammar

his family/his family members

John was heard singing a song in the bathroom when his family (members) were watching TV yesterday.

Would it make a difference if I omit "members" in the above? Thanks.

Top answer

"Members" makes it formal, pretentious. Also, his family was watching is more frequent than his family were watching.
