Hire

Hello,

The Oxford Advanced Learner´s Compass refers that the verb "To Hire" meaning to give somebody a job, is mainly used in American English. I would like to know if a sentence like "The company is hiring new workers" would sound unusual for a British native speaker and what other verb could be used in such a context.

Many thanks in advance.

Rui.
