2) Hip does not sound right with 'house'.

3) The problem with 'hip' is that it is pretty old fashioned, more 1970s language, so if it is used these days it is to create a deliberate (usually tongue in cheek) effect. To me, funky also implies something brightly coloured or brightly patterned as well as the other words in definition one..

Words can have lots of meanings.
Funky, as in smelly, is a very slangy term and (I think) tends to be used by fairly young people and it should be obvious from the context really. I've only heard it used in a pretty straightforward way, i.e. 'Phew! There's something funky in here' or 'your fridge smells a bit funky' or '*** your trainers getting funky'. Think of it as 'stinky'...you wouldn'
