Himself/herself does not acknowledge it

Which of the following sentences is natural and correct? Could you please help me with it?


1: Although a teacher himself/herself does not acknowledge it.

2: Although a teacher themselves does not acknowledge it.

(You can replace 'himself' with 'herself', of course.)

Themselves is for a plural antecedent. The antecedent is used with the definite article or it is a proper noun.

Although the Republican congressmen themselves will not admit it publicly, in private they acknowledge that the elections were  fair and their party lost.

I myself cannot believe that these people are still filing lawsuits.
