Him/he Confusion.

Could anyone tell me if the sentence below is grammatically correct, particularly with respect to the 'he' on the end?

The male house spider already knew the intruder was another spider and one smaller than he.

It's interesting. Many, many people would use (incorrectly) him in this case. I find that when I use he without the verb it sounds pretentious, pompous to
