Him vs himself

Do you know why he put the backpack next to -------? I think that's because thieves are all around.

1) him 2) himself 3) his 4) itself

According to the following link, the correct answer for this test is only "him". However, I have heard many native speakers say "himself" in these occasions as well. Do you agree with the article and think than "himself" is wrong here?

No. I also don't agree that it is wrong with various others of the random list given in that article. For example, "He hid himself", "He shaved himself", "He sat himself down", "He remembered himself", "He adapted himself" are all possible in my book.
