Hill

Hi.
#1 We summered on the outskirts of Split. Tommy lived in a house down a hill (from us).
#2 We summered on the outskirts of Split. Tommy lived in a house down the hill (from us).

The hill hasn't been mentioned before in both cases. I parenthesized 'from us' because I may or may not write it, I think it's superfluous.

I think both are fine:

#1 a hill: I don't think my reader knows that there is a hill, so I am introducing it.
#2 the hill: it's the hill that's there, on which we lived. Even I haven't mentioned it, my reader will make this conclusion.

Can a native speaker confirm if I got it right? Thank you.
