hijack

I've also seen the spelling 'highjack', is it American?

Seems so, it's listed in the M-W dictionary as a variant of hijack.

American Heritage agrees but doesn't list one as 'variant'. or is the term they use here, with 'hijack' as the first listing. [I like AH because it doesn't list in order of 'proper'; it just lists.]
