Vocabulary

Highest/Tallest

I got this doubt while replying to hrsanei's question about 'the' before mountains.

Which of the following is right?

1.The Mount Everest is considered as the highest mountain in the world.

2. The Mount Everest is considered as the tallest mountain in the world.

Where should we use only 'tallest' or only 'hishest'?

Thanks.

Mount Everest is considered as the highest mountain in the world. Not, the Mount Everest. Little children when they are talking about mountains, use "tallest" because we use that expression when descrbing the height of people.

Neither is correct.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.

(The before Mount Everest is wrong, and it's not considered to be - it's a fact that it is the highest mountain.)

Highest is usually used for natural features and tallest for man-made constructions like skyscrapers and towers.

Hi

That's interesting

With geographical features, I wouldn't use "the" with a mountain - I'd just say "Mount Everest". On the other hand, I would say "The Khyber Pass"

To answer your question, I think tallest is used with humans, animals and with human-made objects, but highest is used with a geographical feature

- He is the tallest man

Hi

Rover's point about the ladder is good - it seems to be an exception..

- We're going to need the longest ladder we can find; and then climb to the highest step
