I'm looking at the unemplyment benefit chart at
http://www.edd.ca.gov/uirep/de1101bt2.pdf (Too sad that I have to look this up:-( I have trouble to understand "Amount of wages in highest quarter". What is "quarter"? What's "highest quarter"?

A quarter of a year, or a three-month period. In this case, referring to the three-month period in which a person earned the highest wages ( or most money). Some calculations deal with the best quarter in a span of years, for example, in the past 5 years before retirement.

In the financial pages, use of the "quarter" is a fixed calendar period. First quarter of the year, or Jan, Feb, Mar.

Each three-month period in the calendar year is referred to as a quarter. January-February-March comprise the first quarter, and so on. It's a method widely used in financial reporting.
The "highest quarter" in this context means the three-month period during which the UI claimant recorded his or her highest earnings.

Oy? Probably not. MWCD10 says it's been around since the late 18th century. I guess I've been doing too many patents lately, where "comprising" necessarily goes the other way.

With the caveat that if you're talking about a company, the particular months depend on when that company has arbitrarily chosen to end its year. At HP, our fiscal year ends in October, so the first quarter comprises November, December, and January.

Oh, right. Yes. It's always officially "fiscal year ending October 31, ". Can a company actually end its fiscal year mid- calendar-month? My recollection of seeing corporate tax forms and the like is that they tend to have a bubble for month but no way to specify day.
