high threshold

We use the Japanese equivalent of 'the threshold is high', meaning
'feel uneasy to visit (somebody)'.
Say Mr. A owes Mr. B some money. Mr. A would not particularly like
to visit Mr. B unless he is returning the money to him. Also, say
you have not attended the annual meetings of old classmates for
years, it requires some courage to go there.
"I want to go there, but the threshold is high."
I wonder if there is such a figurative expression in English.
