Hey, big guy! You hear the news. My son got the leadin the high school musical. He's an ace musician at the high school band?

So it's a thing the high school is performing for the public, right?
It's not some special musical school.

There's a possiblity that the child is enrolled in a special musical school, I suppose, but more than likely it's just a "regular" high school. Many, if not most, high schools here put on some kind of show once or twice a year, usually directed by the music or drama teacher or both. (A friend of mine who teaches high school drama is required to direct a "straight play" in the fall and a musical - much more work! - in the spring.) There are usually daytime performances for the student body and one or two nightime performances for the parents or, as you say, the "public." Some of the larger American high schools with excellent, big-budget arts programs put on shows that are entertaining by any standard; others are shows that, as the old expression has it, "only a mother could love."
