The usual form is singular, and it usually implies the aspiration to be a tenured professor, department head, director of a research institution or receive the Nobel prize.

He desires to reach a high level in the scientific hierarchy.

I want to say :
He desires to reach high ranks in science.
I'm not sure which word is more suitable. rank, hierarchy or... ?

'Echelons' is a good word, too.

Rank is fine. That may be interpreted as he wants to get into management positions. (in a university or research environment).

Thank you very much guys.Do "rank" and "echelon" imply being distinguished or eminent in science? In fact, I don't want the sentence to merely imply "authority".

"upper echelon of elite/distinguished scientists" - This might be close to the meaning you are looking for.
