Hide or "not show"

I am having problem explaining to someone why "hide" should be used in preference to "not show" in the following statement (it's actually a checkbox on a computer)

o Not show the detail

Can someone help me explain?

"Hide (the) details" is a complete sentence. "Not show the detail" is not. Depending on the context, maybe "Don't show details" would be as good as "Hide details".
