Hi teachers, please help out

The masked man sees light coming from an office at the end of the dark hall and heads to it. The door is half open. Inside, a woman is sitting at a desk working on a laptop. Staying in the shadow of the hall, the masked man watches the woman.

Hi teachers.

The intention is that the masked man stands/stays just outside the doorway into the office. Is the underscored sentence natural and as you would write it? Or is one of these better:

Staying in the shadow of the dark hall,...

Staying in the shadows of the hall,...

Staying in the shadows of the dark hall,...

Staying in the dark of the hall,...

Top answer

Literally, which is what we have here, the shadow of a thing is cast by the thing. The hall does not cast a shadow. He stayed in the shadows in the dark hallway.
