Whether public museums and art galleries are needed nowadays is a controversial issue. While many believe that museums and art halls are inessential since their collections could be seen online, it is unlikely that they could be replaced. I wholeheartedly believe that the internet cannot substitute conventional art galleries and museums.
On the one hand, it is no wonder that with unlimited access to technology, computers let people virtually tour artistic and historical collections in no time. With a click of a mouse, all desire information will be at hand, not just the objects but also the related data. Users, for instance, can access info and metadata for various artworks, through social media, and even with video content. Furthermore, it is less time-consuming. One can save time by sitting in their room and digitally interact with those collections, rather than traveling far away just to look at the same features. For these reasons, technology could eventually eradicate art galleries and museums.
On the other hand, the existence of art galleries and public museums offer tremendous benefits that passive activity of computer cannot. They promote one’s health, both physically and mentally. Walking around the hall of an art gallery or museum would catalyze flexibility, which is notably ideal for the elders. Besides, individuals’ mental well-being are also be catered for, since they will have the chance to interact and socialize with people sharing the same interests. Art galleries and museums, hence, can never be replaced.
Taking everything into consideration, many people believe that there is no need for museums and art galleries these days. Though computers can provide satisfactory information and save traveling time, they cannot replicate the health benefit which galleries and museums promote. In my opinion, these conventional forms will be safe in the age of advanced technology.
