Hi, past perfect help

Hi, I've been reading many books about Past Perfect function, and I just can't get it into my brain. I don't know what else to do. I've been learning English for 2 years now. I've bought over 3081 books to learn the language.
I start to think that I might have spent the money pointlessly, I'm thinking on giving up.

Can you guys teach me how to use Past Perfect in the most simple way possible? Thanks in advance.

Let me offer you these very brief examples to consider.

Example 1 - Tom came home at 6pm. Mary cooked dinner. Sounds like she cooked it after 6pm.

Example 2 - Tom came home at 6pm. Mary had cooked dinner. This means that she cooked it before 6pm.

Do you understand these?
