In May 2005 my family relocated to a village to start a cocoa farm.For over a decade I lived in a rural community and experienced the impact of urbanisation on rural environments and natural resources.This exposure ignited my passion in rural community sustainability and the decision to pursue a career in this field.I want to study MAEP because I believe it will prepare me academically and professionally to excel in my future career.I want to examine how national policies on urbanisation and rural communities undermine sustainable development.
My research interest lies in urban studies, natural resource management and sustainable rural development. I am particularly interested in examining the nexus between urbanisation and sustainable rural development. I am interested in finding out;(1) how rapid urbanisation can thwart the sustainable development of rural communities,(2)how national policies aimed at promoting sustainable uniform development undermines the sustainability of rural communities.(3)the need for developing rural communities rurally and not urbanely,(4)how aspects of traditional knowledge that are relevant to achieving rural community sustainability can be integrated into rural development paradigms.
The interdisciplinary nature of the program, it’s theoretical and practical methodology to understanding environmental issues and relevant courses on environmental and community sustainability makes it an excellent fit for me. I strongly believe these will prepare me adequately to provide effective solutions to environmental problems globally. Additionally an admission into this program will give me the opportunity to study under erudite scholars and professionals in this field. I am particularly interested in the works of Dr. XYZ on rural-urban connections . I have discussed my future research plan with her and She has agreed to act as a potential supervisor if am admitted into the program. I am convinced that the intellectual environment I would be afforded at ABC University through a rigorous and practically oriented program, would be unmatched by most institutions.
In the final year of my undergraduate studies I wrote a dissertation on the impacts of urban induced demand for natural resources on rural communities. My research involved the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods to collate data from four rural communities. This study revealed how rapid urbanisation and its concomitant demand for natural resources coupled with the lack of appropriate environmental policies was destroying the natural environment.Additionally I worked as a research assistant with the department of Geography and Resource Development after my undergraduate studies. My role here was to carry out fieldwork on sustainable indigenous methods of farming in Ghana. The finding of this work has been compiled into a book.. In addition to enhancing my skills in data analysis and time management, these research experiences has shaped and prepared me to undertake field studies in rural areas.
My career objective is to occupy a faculty position at a university or research institution as a researcher and a teacher after I have earned my PhD. This would give me the opportunity to conduct research into developmental issues plaguing humanity and work alongside colleagues from various disciplines to find antidotes to these developmental maladies.Considering my proven academic and research competence,maturity and communication skills, I am highly confident that I will be of immense benefit to the programme if granted this opportunity.
