Some people believe that teenagers should be required to do unpaid community work in their free time. This can benefit teenagers and the community as well. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In this day and age, adolescents have a tendency to spend their leisure time attending voluntary work. A number of people advocate youngsters ought to be forced to do unpaid community service. Although it sounds beneficial for both society and teenagers, I sincerely disagree with that statement and I will elaborate my reasons below.
To begin with, compulsory community service could bring intangible pressure to students. After stressful study hours, teenagers even have to participate in extra-classes, consequently, they need time to relax instead of doing the activities that do not gain any financial incentives. As an illustration, Korean teenagers preparing for the university entrance exam have such a tight schedule that they even have little time to sleep. If unpaid community work is required, they would become overloaded and likely to suffer from health disorders.
Furthermore, as teenagers are under 18, they have not had legal responsibility for any errors made when they do volunteer. Given that students do not possess inadequate skill to confront unexpected situations, they possibly make mistakes whether serious or not could pose a threat to the community or even themselves. For instance, when doing gardening in public gardens, they could be stinged by insects. If it is a venomous animal, they may even face death and the government has to take ownership of that accident.
Nevertheless, what this view may overlook is that teenagers receive opportunities to master their practical skills such as time-management while serving community work. To elaborate, they can learn to arrange their time for relaxing and working or also can learn how to work as a team efficiently. Additionally, by making mistakes, adolescents could improve their ability. Only if people have experience can they succeed in the future.
In conclusion, it is no exaggeration to assert that not only society but also youngsters could repeat benefits from community work. However, voluntary work should be encouraged to complete rather than be forced to do due to its feasible drawbacks.
